Out & About
.........Welcome
letter .........2007-08
Block 3 Schedule
Out & About is an extracurricular recreational program
that allows Holy Childhood adult consumers and students ages
14 and
up to broaden their recreational and social skills and knowledge.
It takes place after School and work hours. Outings offer inclusion
and interaction within the community that are crucial to establishing
normal and healthy social lives.
The program has very distinct goals
for Out & About. They include:
- Development
of lifetime recreational skills.
- Specialized
and unique inclusion within the community and appropriate
peer groups.
- Improvement
of socialization skills.
- Increased
public awareness of the capabilities, interests, and needs
of the
developmentally disabled.
- Increased
independence and comfort within the community.
- Collaboration
with area colleges, community venues, social clubs, and
other non-profit agencies.
The respite
that this program offers the families of these children
and adults is invaluable
and
the level
of sheer
enjoyment that
recreational outings provide cannot be measured.
Participants are exposed to the recreational
resources of the community
and, when
possible, learn to access them independently.
Outings have included a Red Wings baseball game, a train
trip to Syracuse
for dinner,
plays, a tour of Eastman Kodak Co., bowling
and a clinic from the Rochester Americans Hockey Team.
It is
a natural progression of the services already
provided by the School of the Holy Childhood
- programs in which
the main goal
is to make each child and adult as independent
as possible in the most well-rounded lifestyle
we can
help provide.
Kids Klub
Kids Klub is an after school program
for younger students that is held once a week during the
School year. Participants
are
able to get out into the community to learn
about activities and resources,
meet new people and to show the public that
people with disabilities have abilities as well. It’s
also an opportunity to socialize and have
fun with school friends while offering parents and
families
a brief respite. Outings have included a
tour of Bruegger's Bagels, a trip to the Lilac Festival
and bowling.
Respite
Respite trips are organized for Holy Childhood
adults several times each year. Trips usually
include weekend
getaways
to area parks
and planned recreational activities such
as movies, games and hikes.
