Jimmy W. Wilmot Adult Day Training
Program
The Jimmy W. Wilmot Adult Day Training Program provides vocational training and sheltered employment for adults with developmental disabilities. The program is designed to prepare program participants for community employment. To help achieve this goal, we offer training in prevocational skills, woodworking, food service, and facilities maintenance. Social and health needs are addressed with our social activity group and our adapted physical education program. The Adult Program is certified by the New York State Department of Labor, as well as the New York State Office of People With Developmental Disabilities.
Program Details
The Special Touch Bakery
Workers in the Special Touch Bakery learn the different tasks associated with pie making. The Bakery produces an average of 17,650 pies per year. The 18 varieties of pies are sold on a continuous basis to approximately 50 commercial accounts that include restaurants, country clubs, and senior living centers. Pies are sold to the general public, as well. The bakery is inspected annually by the Department of Agriculture.
Woodworking
In the woodworking program, workers learn basic woodworking skills. They are taught how to use heavy machinery and observe tool safety. The woodworking program produces a variety of items including chests, Adirondack chairs and picnic sets. Many items are sold at the annual craft sale in the fall and at weekend mall sales in December. The program also has had contracts with RG&E, Time Warner, Frontier Corporation, and Fairfield Farms to produce stakes, wedges, and display racks.
Partners With Industry
Partners With Industry (PWI), is designed to train individuals in achieving maximum production and high quality levels. They perform sub contract work such as sorting, assembly, fulfillment, shrink wrapping, bulk mailings and other labor intensive work. PWI contracts with more than 25 companies including PAYCHEX, Wegmans, Eastern Maintenance and TLF Graphics. For more information on this workshop visit partnerswithindustry.webs.com.
PWI Transition & Skills Training Groups
The PWI Transition and Skills Training Groups provide extra support for individuals interested in moving into sheltered employment full-time. Individuals work on job related skills that emphasize appropriate communication, attention to task, work quality, work stamina, work rate, and gathering of work materials. These groups work on their skills both within School of the Holy Childhood and in the community. Individuals in these groups earn a paycheck by performing some paid work, provided by Partners With Industry.
Prevocational Food Service Skills
Individuals in this program work to develop the skills necessary to work in the bakery, as well as the skills to function more independently in a residential setting. The skills practiced include measuring of ingredients, use of utensils and small appliances, basic cooking techniques, kitchen safety, maintenance tasks, and personal hygiene.
Adapted Physical Education
The Jimmy W. Wilmot Adult Day Training Program at The School of the Holy Childhood provides a unique opportunity for the program participants to engage in a Physical Education program. The program provides a comprehensive curriculum to help promote lifelong recreational skills along with health and fitness. Each individual participates in up to two classes a week. The classes take place in our weight room, gymnasium, pool, and various outdoor locations.
